Dawn Prayers on the Ganges
2011, 80″ W x 47″ H
The people of India travel to their sacred Mother Ganges River to pray, bathe and make offerings to their gods.
Award: “Dawn Prayers on the Ganges” was awarded Best Quilt in the World, 2011 at the Mancuso Brothers’ Best Quilts in the World 2011 Show.
Technique: A fabric collage was constructed from Indian dupioni silk and cotton batiks, then covered with fine black tulle and free-motion quilted. The borders are made of dupioni silk and antique brocade sari trims. Faces were drawn on cotton batiks with Caran d’Ache watercolor pencils and permanent ink pens. Embellishments of beads, sequins, pearls and hand embroidery were added; the splashing water was made with mylar thread and tiny seed and crystal beads.
